Solids, Liquids, Gases = Root Beer Floats

There is no better way to see solids, liquids, and gases than in a root beer float before eating it!!  Second graders were able to see all three forms of matter in their floats. They enjoyed eating the floats and making a book about the activity.

Making Butter

During our unit on matter, we also made butter.  We used a liquid (heavy whipping cream) and a solid (a marble) together in a container and shook and shook and SHOOK the container until the contents turned into butter.  Then we sampled our butter on crackers. It was a success!!

Measuring Mass

Second grade has been studying matter in Science.  They have been busy learning how to use a balance to find the mass of solid objects.

Science Fun

Who knew erosion could be so much fun?  We have been discussing weathering and erosion during second grade Science class.  We have been learning that wind and water are two movements that cause erosion.  Students took turns blowing through straws to see how air movement moved sand and also use small water bottles to represent erosion with water.  They then came up with the idea to do wind and water erosion at the same time to see the end result.  Hands-on activities are valuable components of our Science curriculum.  Of course, the students think the messier the activity the better!

Successful Second Grade Reading Night

Thank you parents, grandparents, and guardians for making our reading night a big success.  It was so wonderful to hear the sounds of laughter filling the hallways last night.  I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did.  Here are a few pictures that were taken.......enjoy!!!
